Barratts Music is one of Tasmania’s premier music stores. This was a clothing store, but later extended to sell pianos and organs. This store was setup by James Barrett sir in 1894. Took over the business, and in 1923 moved it to Launceston to open a stuffed musical instrument store, below the name Barrett and Joscelyne. At this address he was selling pianos, organs, second hand books and music boxes. Cyril Barrett, James’ second son, returned from army duty in 1945 and joined his father in the music business. Four years later in 1949 Cyril bought the business from his father. By this time the business had expanded beyond purely musical instruments, and was selling audio equipment, refrigerators, stoves etc as well. In the post war era, business was brisk, but often products were firm to acquire as local manufacturers recovered from the war years, and imports were strictly limited. Around this time, a large percentage of the business was the purchase of impaired rundown pianos, and painstakingly rebuilding, re polishing and refurbishing them for resale. Numerous of the impaired tools and parts are quiet in the building, and the worn hand winch (pictured above) that was worn to elevate pianos from the lane way beside the building into the top store area is still in use today, as our top place is a piano showroom where you can try out pianos and electric pianos. Both Cyril and his older brother Dave had trained in Europe as piano technicians, so Cyril ran the sales section of the business, and Dave worked upstairs in the workshop. He worked predominantly in the workshop for a scanty years and then moved to Sydney to total his apprenticeship as a piano technician, at the Beadle factory. Rob applied for the position of manager, and won the position. Also in 1966, Rob took on the Yamaha electronic organ dealership, which involved buying out the stock of the current dealer, and heading the business in a diverse direction. This was done in Cyril’s absence, so he couldn’t veto it, but it turned out to be a immense step for the business, and the dealership with Yamaha is calm mighty in 2010, with Barratts Music being one of the longest successive Yamaha dealers in Australia. Mark Barrett, Rob’s previous son, joined the business in 1991, behind pursuing other labor for eight years first. Mark only worked with Rob for a few years as Rob contracted cancer in 1992. When Rob’s cancer returned, he sold Barratts Music to Mark in 2001 and then left the business. Mark continues in the business now, upholding the sure family values that have helped Barratts Music succeed through many good and many tumultuous years. Mark’s focus has been on making music close to everyone, especially young children, and he has continuing special interests in music as therapy and for the aged, along with the benefits of music on neurological development and mental health. He is keen to implement these insights into the business model for Barratts Music into the future.
